Detailed Solution

Most of the Sinhala-speaking people are Buddhists in Sri Lanka. The Sinhala speakers of the nation formed 74 per cent of its population, and the Tamil speakers formed 18 per cent. Among the Tamil speakers, the natives of the country are called Sri Lankan Tamils, concentrated in the northeast of the country, and those whose forefathers came from India are called Indian Tamils. Most of the Sinhala speakers of the nation are Buddhists. The Tamils were the ones who were Hindus or Muslims. After Sri Lanka gained Independence in 1948, the leaders of the majority Sinhala community sought to secure dominance over the elected government by adopting a series of majoritarian measures establishing their supremacy. This strained communal relations and eventually led to a civil war.
