Nuclear reactions release energy through either fission or fusion. Atoms combine in nuclear fusion to create a bigger atom. Atoms split during nuclear fission in order to create smaller atoms by releasing energy. Nuclear fission is the source of energy in nuclear power plants. Nuclear reactions can generate enormous amounts of energy even in the absence of the sun. Whereas other energy sources like biomass, geothermal, and wind energy have ultimately obtained their energy from the energy of the sun. For example, the wind is created due to differences in pressure, which in turn is the result of heating caused due to the light coming from the sun.
