Detailed Solution

Most of the Tamils living in Sri Lanka are Hindus and Muslims.
The population of Sri Lanka consists of two major linguistic groups. Sinhala speakers make up about 74% of the total population, whereas Tamil speakers account for a considerable 18%. Within the Tamils, there are two sub-groups. The Sri Lankan Tamils are the people who claim that they are native to the island nation. The Indian Tamils are the people whose forefathers migrated from southern India to Sri Lanka during British rule to work in plantations. While most of the Sinhala speakers are Buddhists, the Tamils follow either Hinduism or Islam.
