River Tapi flows through a rift valley. This river flows through a rift valley parallel to the river Narmada which is also floating in the rift valley. Tapi originates in the Satpura range in the Betul district of Madhya Pradesh, and after flowing for 700 k.m, this river drains into the Arabian Sea near Surat in Gujarat. The rift valley is formed when continental plates collide and break mid-slightly, and in the case of the Tapi river, it flows between two spurs of the Satpura range. Its major tributaries are Purna, Girna, and Panjhra. Tapi and Narmada rivers both form natural barriers between Northern and Peninsular India.
