In Orissa, the Hirakud dam is being erected across the Mahanadi River. Hirakud dam is one of the world's longest dams, measuring around 26 kilometres in length. The Hirakud Reservoir is a 55-kilometre-long multipurpose plan for flood control, irrigation, and power generation. The Hirakud dam helps to manage floods in the Mahanadi delta and irrigates nearly 75,000 square kilometres of land.
