Q.

Multiple choice questions

Following is the sequence of generating geothermal energy:

1)      It is so hot that when it rises to the earth's surface, it turns into steam.

2)      Groundwater in such areas (where the geothermal gradient is high) absorbs heat from the rocks and becomes hot.

3)      This steam is used to drive turbines and generate electricity.

4)      Geothermal energy exists, because the earth grows progressively hotter with increasing depth.

Detailed Solution

Geothermal energy :
Geothermal energy exists because the earth's temperature increases with depth. High temperatures were obtained at shallow depths where the geothermal gradient is steep. In such situations, groundwater takes heat from the rocks and becomes hot. It's so hot that when it reaches the earth's surface, it condenses into steam. This steam powers turbines and generates electricity.
Geothermal energy is the heat and electricity created by utilising heat from the earth's interior. India has hundreds of hot springs that could be exploited to generate electricity. Two pilot projects to harness geothermal energy have been established in India. One is in the Parvati Valley near Manikaran in Himachal Pradesh, and the other is in the Puga Valley in Ladakh.
