Bhopal Lake was the largest lake that was built in the 11th Century. Its former names were Upper Lake and Shah Ali Shah Talab. This lake lies to the west of the capital city of Madhya Pradesh, Bhopal. This lake contributes a major part to providing drinking water to the city; nearly 40% of the population of Bhopal intakes water from this lake only. This lake and the small lake nearby make Bhoj wetland, which was also declared a Ramsar site a few years back. Raja Bhoj constructed this lake in the 11th Century by establishing a Dam over the Koans river.
