Muscle cells known as myocytes form the muscular tissue. They are long and elongated in shape. They are classified into three types.

Skeletal muscles:  They are cylindrical in shape and are present in limbs, body wall, tongue, pharynx, and the beginning of the esophagus. They provide support, help with movement and maintain homeostasis in the body.

Smooth muscle: They are spindle-shaped with tapering ends. They are present in the esophagus, urinary bladder, urinogenital tract, vessels, the iris of the eyes, the dermis of the skin, etc. They help in peristalsis and other involuntary functions of the body.

Cardiac muscles: They are cylindrical in shape and form the muscles of the heart only. They keep the heart pumping which helps in blood circulation throughout the body.
