n – p – n transistors are preferred to p – n – p transistors because                                           

           

In an npn transistor current in both inside and outside of the transistor is due to movement of electrons. Whereas, in pnp transistor current inside is due to the movement of the holes and outside it is due to the movement of the electrons. As mobility of the electron is more than mobility of the holes so npn transistor is faster.
