The two main effects of electric current are the heating effect and the magnetic effect.

1. Heating Effect

When an electric current passes through a conductor, the electrical energy is converted into heat energy. This is called the heating effect of current.

Examples

Electric heater and iron use this effect to produce heat.
Electric bulb filaments glow because of heat produced by current.

Formula

Heat produced (H) = I²Rt Where I = current, R = resistance, and t = time.

2. Magnetic Effect

When current flows through a wire, it produces a magnetic field around it. This is the magnetic effect of current.

Examples

Electromagnets used in cranes and motors work on this effect.
Electric bells and relays use magnetic coils to function.
