Detailed Solution

The two main effects of electric current are the heating effect and the magnetic effect.

1. Heating Effect

When an electric current passes through a conductor, the electrical energy is converted into heat energy. This is called the heating effect of current.

Examples

  • Electric heater and iron use this effect to produce heat.
  • Electric bulb filaments glow because of heat produced by current.

Formula

Heat produced (H) = I²Rt Where I = current, R = resistance, and t = time.

2. Magnetic Effect

When current flows through a wire, it produces a magnetic field around it. This is the magnetic effect of current.

Examples

  • Electromagnets used in cranes and motors work on this effect.
  • Electric bells and relays use magnetic coils to function.
