Detailed Solution

Taille is the direct tax levied on the third estate.
The first two estates' members were born with many social privileges. The Nobles also benefited from feudal privileges, such as collecting feudal dues from the peasants. In their homes, fields, armies, or when constructing roads, peasants were required to provide their labor and services to the two estates above. Direct and indirect taxes were each given their category. Salt and tobacco were examples of everyday consumer goods subject to indirect taxes, sometimes known as taille. The clergy and members of the aristocracy who were exempt from military service did not pay the taille, which meant that the levy was imposed on commoners and unprivileged lands. The taille collection was formally organized by Charles VII (1422–1561) and made permanent and only royal. Up to the French Revolution, the monarchs of France continued to collect the taille at an ever-increasing rate, which had become an essential source of royal revenue.
