Slash-and-burn agriculture is primitive subsistence farming. In this farming, the cultivator clears an area, plots the vegetation, and burns it. They use the ash as manure and till the land to sow seeds. They use this plot until it gets infertile. Once the plot loses fertility, they move on to the following plot. This kind of farming is very primitive in method and technique and is done for subsistence purposes. Such farming is practised in dense forest areas. In India, it is practised mainly in the northeastern states like Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Nagaland, Andaman Nicobar Islands etc.
