Detailed Solution

The final product of glycolysis is pyruvic acid (pyruvate).

Glycolysis is the first step in cellular respiration that breaks down one molecule of glucose into two molecules of pyruvate. It occurs in the cytoplasm and does not require oxygen, so it can happen in both aerobic and anaerobic conditions. During glycolysis, two ATP molecules are used and four are produced, giving a net gain of two ATP. Two molecules of NADH are also formed.

The pyruvate formed then enters mitochondria for further oxidation (in aerobic respiration) or is converted to lactic acid or ethanol in anaerobic conditions.
