The international airport in Hyderabad in Telangana is named Rajiv Gandhi International Airport after the former Prime Minister of India, Rajiv Gandhi. Earlier, the Begumpet Airport was the only airport in Hyderabad. The Rajiv Gandhi International Airport was opened in 2008, replacing it. The largest airport in India in terms of area, the airport ranks the fourth busiest in India in terms of passenger traffic. It has two runways. The airport is coded HYD (for Hyderabad) by IATA. The old airport at Begumpet could not handle the inflow of a large number of passengers, leading to the construction of a new airport at Shamshabad, south of Begumpet airport.
