Detailed Solution

Durgapur Iron and Steel plant is marked on the physical map of India. It is in West Bengal, commissioned in 1962. The Bolani and Mayurbhanj mines supply iron ore to the plant. They are located close to the plant, within a 500 km radius. The Jharia and Raniganj coal mines provide energy sources. Limestone and Dolomite are readily available, and hydroelectricity from the Damodar valley supported the development of the iron and steel plant in Durgapur. The Damodar river ensured plenty of water for industrial processes. Cheap labour was readily available from the surrounding areas. The railways of Kolkata linked the plant to other parts of the country for raw materials and markets.
