Hiroshima and Nagasaki were the Japanese cities where bombs were dropped. The atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki during World War II and the American bombing of the Japanese cities of Hiroshima (August 6, 1945) and Nagasaki (August 9, 1945) marked the first use of nuclear weapons in war. Thousands died in the initial explosions. Many later succumbed to radiation poisoning. By 1945, the bombing had killed about 140,000 people in Hiroshima and more than 74,000 in Nagasaki. In the years that followed, many survivors would have leukaemia, cancer, or other side effects of radiation.
