Leaders like Jawaharlal Nehru and Subhas Chandra Bose supported calls for greater freedom and equality for women in the 20th century. Beginning in the early 20th century, women established political pressure groups to push legislation granting women the right to vote and more excellent health and educational opportunities. From the 1920s onward, some of them joined various nationalist and socialist organisations. After Independence, nationalist leaders claimed that men and women would have complete suffrage. However, women were asked to focus on the anti-British struggles until that point.
