Detailed Solution

Acetylcholine is the neurotransmitter released from the motor neuron's axon terminals into the synaptic cleft (the small gap between the motor neuron and the muscle fiber). It plays a crucial role in transmitting the nerve signal from the motor neuron to the muscle fiber, leading to muscle contraction.

When an action potential reaches the motor end plate (neuromuscular junction), it triggers the release of acetylcholine into the synaptic cleft. Acetylcholine then binds to receptors on the muscle fiber's sarcolemma (cell membrane), leading to a series of events that ultimately result in the contraction of the muscle fiber.

After acetylcholine has done its job in transmitting the signal, it is rapidly broken down by an enzyme called acetylcholinesterase to prevent continuous muscle stimulation. This breakdown of acetylcholine allows the muscle to relax and return to its resting state.
