Giuseppe Mazzini founded the secret society named Young Italy.
Italy had a long history of political disintegration, just like Germany. Italians were dispersed over a number of dynastic realms and the multicultural Habsburg Empire. Giuseppe Mazzini attempted to develop a coherent plan for the unifying Italian Republic in the 1830s. In order to further his objectives, he also founded a secret organisation named Young Italy. Due to the failure of the revolutionary movements in 1831 and 1848, Sardinia-Piedmont and its monarch King Victor Emmanuel II were given the responsibility of bringing the Italian nations together militarily. The ruling class in this area saw a united Italy as providing them with the opportunity for political and economic advancement.
