The Architects of Non-Alignment

These three leaders are considered the principal architects of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), which was formally established at the Belgrade Conference in 1961. The movement provided a platform for newly independent nations to assert their sovereignty during the Cold War without aligning with either the US-led Western Bloc or the Soviet-led Eastern Bloc. 

• Jawaharlal Nehru (India): As the first Prime Minister of a newly independent India, Nehru was a major proponent of peaceful coexistence and wanted developing nations to forge their own independent foreign policies. He championed the idea that countries should not become pawns in the ideological battle between the superpowers.
• Gamal Abdel Nasser (Egypt): A leading figure of pan-Arab nationalism, Nasser sought to steer the Middle East away from Western colonial influence. His defiance during the Suez Crisis of 1956 made him a powerful voice for national independence, a core principle of NAM.
• Josip Broz Tito (Yugoslavia): As the leader of a socialist state that had successfully broken away from the Soviet Union's direct control, Tito was uniquely positioned to advocate for a "third way." He provided a European base for the movement and hosted the first NAM summit in Belgrade, giving it a formal structure.

While Sukarno of Indonesia and Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana were also pivotal founding figures, Nehru, Nasser, and Tito are universally recognized as the central trio who drove the formation of the movement.
