Detailed Solution

Nana Saheb, the adopted son of Peshwa Baji Rao II, pleaded to the British for a pension. After his death, Nana Saheb had to practically beg the British for a pension. The influence of nawabs and rajas had been declining since the mid-eighteenth century due to the increased presence of the British East India Company. They had steadily lost their power and prestige. British Residents were stationed in several courts, the rulers' freedom was curtailed, their armed forces disbanded, and their revenues and territory were taken away step by step. In the end, Nana Saheb was not given his pension, which made him plead for it.
