Detailed Solution

Nana Saheb was the adopted son of Peshwa Bajirao II.
Many governing families attempted to bargain with the company in order to protect their interests. For example, after her husband died, Rani Lakshmibai of Jhansi requested that the company recognize her adopted son as the heir to the kingdom. Nana Saheb, Peshwa Baji Rao II adopted son, requested that he be given his father's pension when the latter died. However, the company, secure in its strength and military might, refused these requests. One of the last territories to be acquired was Awadh. A subsidiary alliance was forced on Awadh in 1801, and it was taken over in 1856. The territory was misgoverned, according to Governor-General Dalhousie, and British rule was required to establish an effective administration.
