Narmada Bachao Andolan is a famous single-issue movement started in 1985 against the construction of the Sardar Sarovar Dam on the river Narmada. The movement led by Medha Patkar demanded justice for the relocated communities of the Narmada valley. The dislocated people were not provided with enough land or proper amenities by the government. These people living peacefully in the valley found adjusting to the new environment difficult. Environmentalists, scientists and academia also joined the movement. The movement further opposed the dam's construction because such construction is not environmentally friendly.
