Detailed Solution

Nastic movements are called variation movements.

Nastic movements are plant movements in response to external stimuli that are not directional. The four types of nastic movements are photonastic, nyctinastic, thermonastic, and thigmonastic or seismonastic.

  1. Photonastic movements are movements in response to light, where the movement is not directed towards or away from the light source. E.g. the opening and closing of flowers in response to sunlight.
  2. Nyctinastic movements are movements in response to the alternation of day and night. E.g. the opening and closing of flowers in response to the time of day.
  3. Thermonastic movements are movements in response to changes in temperature. E.g. the opening and closing of some flowers in response to temperature changes.
  4. Thigmonastic or seismonastic movements are movements in response to touch or mechanical stimulation. E.g. the closing of the leaves of the Venus flytrap when an insect touches its trigger hairs.
