Nathpanthis, Siddhacharas, and Yogis that emerged during the period, criticised the ritual and other aspects of conventional religion and the social order, using simple, logical arguments. They believed in and advocated the practice of renouncing the world. Their path to salvation lay in meditation on the formless Ultimate Reality and the realisation of oneness with it. To achieve the practice of renunciation, they advocated intense training of the mind and body through practices like yoga asanas, breathing exercises, and meditation. Among “low” castes, these groups became particularly popular. Criticism of the conventional religion by them created a ground for devotional religion.
