Detailed Solution

Nationalist leaders became aware of icons and symbols in unifying people. Nationalism grows when individuals start to feel connected to one another and realise they are all a part of the same country. Nationalist leaders became increasingly conscious of the role that such images and symbols played in bringing people together and igniting a sense of nationalism in them. A red, green, and yellow tricolour flag was created in Bengal during the Swadeshi movement. The crescent moon represented Hindus and Muslims, while the eight lotuses represented the eight British Indian regions. Gandhiji created the Swaraj flag in 1921. The Gandhian idea of self-help was symbolised by a spinning wheel in the centre of the once-again tricolour (red, green, and white) flag. Carrying the flag and raising it in the air during marches came to represent defiance.
