Detailed Solution

Nayanars were the devotees of Lord Shiva. The Nayanars were a group of 63 saints from the Bhakti movement whose main aim was devotion to Lord Shiva. The Tamil poet-saints, Nayanars, were instrumental in spreading the Bhakti Movement in Southern India from the fifth to the tenth centuries. The members belonged to people from all castes, including the Panars and Pulaiyars, who were regarded as "untouchables." Appar, Sambandar, Sundarar, and Manikkavasagar were the most well-known Nayanars. They advocated adoration of Shiva as the way to salvation. They travelled around, writing and singing songs in praise of Shiva.
