Detailed Solution

Nearly 1,50,000 leopards were killed after hunting from 1875 to 1925.
As they threatened farmers, the British offered incentives to slaughter tigers, leopards, and other giant animals. From 1875 to 1925, around 80,000 tigers, 150,000 leopards, and 200,000 wolves were murdered for sport. The tiger eventually started to be regarded as a sporting trophy. Until 1957, the Maharaja of Sarguja killed 1,157 tigers and 2,000 leopards. Initially, hunting was permitted only in specific parts of forests. Only much later did conservationists and environmentalists start to make the case that all of these species of animals deserved to be saved rather than killed.
