Detailed Solution

Nelson Mandela remained in jail for 28 years.
Nelson Mandela was caught on August 5, 1962, following a 17-month run and imprisoned at the Johannesburg Fort. He had been charged with instigating workers to strike in 1961 and illegally fled the country three days later at a court hearing. Nelson Mandela was sentenced to five years in prison on October 25, 1962. On June 11, 1964, two years later, a judgement was reached about his previous membership in the African National Congress (ANC). After over 27 years of continuous confinement, he was eventually released in 1990. On Robben Island, he spent eighteen of those years. The Pretoria Magistrates Court issued a warrant sending Nelson Mandela to prison for five years after his sentencing on November 7, 1962.
