Nij cultivation was also planting indigo.
In Nij cultivation, Indigo was cultivated by the farmers on their undertaking. The farmer directly planted Indigo in their fields without any mediator. They used to cultivate Indigo either on their land or on the land taken on lease from zamindars. In this system, the farmer himself hired labour by themselves for help in the plantation of Indigo. The NIJ system of cultivation under ryots was employed by the strengthened ryots.
