Detailed Solution

Nij means cultivation on planter’s land.
Nij was a system of cultivation in which the planters cultivated their lands for crops. It was mainly known for indigo cultivation. The planter under this system had his land or rented it from the zamindars for expanding indigo cultivation. However, this system was not devoid of problems. The peasants had to acquire fertile lands. But the fertile lands were already populated. So the Nij planters acquired small scattered plots. It also required many bullocks and ploughs. This process was quite expensive for the planter. Until the late 19th century, not more than 25% of indigo land was under Nij cultivation.
