Nitrating mixture consists of Sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄) and Nitric acid. In the first step of the mechanism of nitration it comprises of generation of "nitronium ion".
In order to do so, Sulfuric acid protonates nitric acid. So H2SO4 acts as an acid while HNO3 which accepts proton acts a base, thereby generating the electrophile NO₂⁺
