Most of the ammonia of the soil is converted to nitrites and nitrates by Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacter bacteria respectively. These bacteria are called nitrifying bacteria. The former converts ammonia to nitrite and the latter, nitrite to nitrate and the entire process is called nitrification.
