NREGA provides 100-days of assured work to rural labour. NREGA was initiated in 2005. The government of India has introduced various employment generation programs, both wage employment and self-employment programs. Under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) 2005, all those individuals who can, and are in requirement to, work in village areas are guaranteed a hundred days of employment each year by the government of our country. If the government fails in its responsibility to generate employment, it will provide unemployment allowances to individuals. This scheme has provided employment opportunities to nearly five crore families in rural areas.
