Trophic hormones are those which influence other endocrine glands and their secretions.

The following are the trophic hormones secreted by the anterior pituitary gland:

  • Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone (TSH): Stimulates the thyroid gland to produce thyroid hormones (T3 and T4), which regulate metabolism and energy production.
  • Adrenocorticotropic Hormone (ACTH): Stimulates the adrenal cortex to produce cortisol and other steroid hormones that are important for stress response, metabolism, and immune function.
  • Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH): In females, stimulates the growth and development of ovarian follicles, and in males, supports the production of sperm in the testes.
  • Luteinising Hormone (LH): In females, triggers ovulation and supports the formation of the corpus luteum, which produces progesterone. In males, stimulates the production of testosterone.
  • Prolactin: Stimulates milk production (lactation) in the mammary glands after childbirth.
  • Growth Hormone (GH): Promotes growth and cell reproduction, and it also has metabolic effects.
