Old name of Masulipatnam was called Masalia.
According to Ptolemy, the settlement has existed since at least the Satavahana era (3rd century BCE), when it was known as Masalia. Masalia is mentioned in The Periplus of the Erythraean Sea from the first century BCE. India's Coromandel Coast, which is the southeast coast of the nation, is where the port is situated. In Machilipatnam, kalamkari fabrics and paintings created with vegetable dyes are well-known. Given that a kalam (pen) was used during the painting process, the technique was referred to as "Kalamkari Painting." During the 17th century, this handicraft attracted the interest of Western traders. Masulipatam was the first British commercial outpost on the Bay of Bengal (1611). From 1686 until 1759, the city was governed by the French and Dutch before being finally given over to the British, who had taken control of the city and fort from the French in 1759.
