On 13 April 1919, a large crowd gathered in Jallianwala Bagh. Some people showed up in protest of the government's recent harsh actions. Others had travelled to take part in the yearly Baisakhi fair. Many of the peasants were from outside the city and were unaware that martial law had been enacted. Hundreds of people were killed when Dyer entered the area, closed off the exits, and started shooting at the crowd. He later stated that his goal was to "generate a moral effect," instilling awe and fear in the hearts of the satyagrahis. Crowds gathered in the streets of various north Indian towns as word of Jallianwalla Bagh spread.
