On 13th April, villagers in Amritsar gathered to celebrate Baisakhi, while some came to protest against the colonial government.
On that day, the notorious Jallianwalla Bagh incident happened when a huge crowd gathered in the Jallianwalla Bagh's enclosed space. Many villagers didn't know martial law had been enacted because they were from outside the city. After entering the area and closing off the exits, Dyer started shooting at the gathering, killing numerous people. As he later stated, his goal was to "generate a moral effect," inspiring fear and awe in the hearts of the Satyagrahis.
