Detailed Solution

On 17th July 1789, the city of Paris was in a state of alarm because rumours spread that the king would soon order the army to open fire upon the citizens.
A command to enter the city had been given by the king. Rumours were he was getting ready to tell the military to start shooting at people. Some 7,000 men and women gathered in front of the town hall to form a people's militia. In their search for weaponry, they broke into many government facilities. Eventually, a group of several hundred men marched to the city's eastern edge. It attacked the Bastille, a fortress jail where they hoped to find munitions that had been hidden. The stronghold was demolished, and anyone who desired a reminder of its demise was able to purchase its stone fragments in marketplaces.
