On May 18, 1848, 831 elected representatives marched in a festive procession to the Frankfurt parliament, which was convened in the Church of St. Paul.
In the German regions, a large number of political associations composed of middle-class professionals, businessmen, and prosperous artisans gathered in Frankfurt and decided to vote for an all-German National Assembly. They drafted a constitution for the German nation ruled by a monarchy subject to parliamentary oversight. The parliament was dominated by the middle classes, who resisted worker and artisan demands and thus lost their support. The issue of granting women political rights was a contentious one within the liberal movement, in which many women had actively participated over the years. Women have formed their own political organisations, established newspapers, and participated in political meetings and demonstrations. Despite this, they were denied suffrage during the Assembly election. Women were only permitted to sit in the visitors' gallery as observers during the Frankfurt parliament's sessions in the Church of St. Paul.
