On 1 October 1953, the new state of Andhra came into being, subsequently becoming Andhra Pradesh.
In the 1920s, Congress declared that states would be formed in independent India based on linguistic distinctions. Political leaders severely objected after independence when this course was not developed. Potti Sriramulu passed away fifty-eight days into his fast on 15 December 1952. According to a newspaper, "the news of Sriramulu's death wrapped all Andhra in turmoil." The central government was compelled to relent on the demand because of extensive and ferocious protests. Thus, the newly created state of Andhra, later known as Andhra Pradesh, was established on 1st October 1953.
