On October 1st, 1953, the new state of Andhra came into being.
The people of the Marathi, Kannada, and Malayalam languages clamoured for their state. Districts of the former Madras Presidency that speak Telugu were the source of the loudest protests. To defend the rights of Telugu speakers, Potti Sriramulu began a hunger strike and demanded the establishment of an Andhra state. Potti Sriramulu passed away in 1952 on December 15th. The newly created Andhra state, known as Andhra Pradesh, was established on October 1st, 1953. A States Reorganisation Commission was established to create compact provinces with speakers of Assamese, Bengali, Oriya, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, and Telugu. Its report, released in 1956, recommended redrawing district and provincial lines.
