On February 22, women-led strikes in factories. This day came to be known as International Women's Day. There were severe food shortages in the workers' housing in February 1917. The winter was freezing; there had been considerable snowfall and tremendous frost. A factory on the right bank experienced a lockout on February 22. The following day, fifty factories' employees declared a sympathy strike. Women took the lead in several factory strikes.
