On March 29, 1857 a young soldier Mangal Pandey was hanged to death for attacking his officers in Barrackpore.
On March 29, 1857, Mangal Pandey, a young soldier, was executed in Barrackpore for opposing his authorities. He refused to use a rifle cartridge laced with pig fat on religious grounds. When questioned by British officers, he shot them, and as a result, he was sentenced to death. Inspired by Pandey, some sepoys in the regiment at Meerut refused to participate in the army exercises with those cartridges. Eighty-five sepoys were discharged from service and sentenced to ten years for disobeying their superiors.
