On January 31, 1930, Mahatma Gandhi sent Viceroy Irwin a letter outlining eleven demands. The abolition of the salt levy sparked a tremendous commotion among Indians because salt was a necessary food element. It was drunk by the wealthy as well as the oppressed. He pleaded with them to be calm in the face of the imposition of tar on salt. In colonial India, Mahatma Gandhi led a nonviolent civil disobedience movement known as the Salt March, also known as the Dandi March and the Dandi Satyagraha. From March 12 to April 6, 1930, the twenty-four-day march was a direct action movement of tax resistance and peaceful protest against the British salt monopoly.
