On September 21st 1792, the Convention abolished the monarchy and declared France a Republic. In addition, the Convention pronounced the monarchy unconstitutional. A Republic is a system of government in which the citizens elect all government members, including the head of state, and a hereditary monarchy does not exist. The National Assembly put the royal family in prison. Elections took place. Regardless of wealth, all men aged 21 and older now had the right to vote. The Convention was the name given to the newly chosen Assembly.
