Manchester imports produced by machines were cheap and flooded the local market. They attracted buyers because they were inexpensive, and Indian textiles could not compete with them. By 1860, Indian weavers were facing a new challenge. They were unable to obtain a sufficient supply of high-quality raw cotton. This occurred due to a civil war in America, which cut off cotton supplies from the United States to Britain, forcing Britain to turn to India. The price of raw cotton increased as the supply of natural cotton from India increased. Indian weavers were forced to pay exorbitant prices for raw cotton. As a result, weaving was no longer profitable. Factories in India also mass-produced goods that flooded the Indian markets. As a result, the Indian weavers faced a difficult time and struggled to survive.
