 India's first paper mill was situated on the banks of Hooghly.
The Indian paper industry dates back more than a century. In 1812, the first paper mill was established in Serampore, West Bengal. This mill, however, failed due to a lack of paper demand. Serampore is a well-known and historically significant city in the Indian state of West Bengal. It serves as the administrative centre for the Srirampore subdivision.
