On July 14, 1789, the city of Paris was placed on high alert when the monarch instructed his men to enter the capital.
The king is rumoured to be about to order the soldiers to begin fire on the citizens. 7000 men and women managed to gather in front of the town hall to form a citizen militia. They raided several government buildings in search of weapons. Finally, several hundred individuals marched to the city's eastern outskirts and attacked the Bastille, a fortress prison where they hoped to find ammunition hoarded. The commander of the Bastille was killed in the ensuing armed battle, and the captives were liberated even though only seven were.
