Gandhiji wanted to start a hartal against the Rowlatt Act on 6 April 1919.
Mahatma Gandhi started a non-violent civil disobedience movement protesting the Rowlatt Act with a hartal on 6 April 1919. This Act of 1919 was a very unjust law giving the police the power to arrest and detain any person without a trial for two years. The protest started with rallies across the cities and strikes by workers in railway workshops. Shocked by the widespread protest, the British government cracked down on the nationalists.
